  • One of our brilliant owners decided to replace 3 200k+ miles chevy 1500s with 3 of these 1st gen. Tundras. This was an oil company. Within 1 year all 3 tundras were DOA. On 2, both rear fenders fell off, couldn't hold the side tool boxes. One ran over it's own bumper cover. All 3 had differential failure. The 3 chevys were still going. Junkotas way overrated. Ok I guess if you don't do real work, leave that to the big 3.

  • I have one of the first 2000 Tundras. I have used and abused it and towed way more than I was supposed to. I have 285,000 on it and don't expect it to ever stop running. I replaced the front suspension and the differential and rear wheel bearings. Did I mention I towed 14,000 pounds? In overdrive? I recently had the front seats recovered and am due for a paint job. I put LEDs in the dash. Yes they had some rust issues. And if you don't want the front end to shudder when you brake ALWAYS hand torque the wheels. I wouldn't trade it for any other truck, including a new one. Hell, I am just getting it broken in!

  • Had a 2000 tundra, to anyone wanting to get a 1st Gen, I reccomend getting one 2003 or newer. Toyota had to figure a few things out on the first few years. The later ones are way more worth it.

  • If I had to buy a pickup, it would absolutely be a first gen Tundra if only for two reasons: they will run forever with proper maint., and they are strangely firm and solid. You take any other early 2000s American pickup and you've got any number of things, be they vibrations like a Colorado or a Ranger, interiors falling apart like Dodges or Chevies, weird mechanical issues like Fords and Chevies, or rust EVERYWHERE like Dodges and Fords, or just being wobbly and just unpredictable enough to be adventurous, the first gen Tundra is none of these. It's firm and every single one drives the same regardless of it's condition. Yay Toyota, I guess.

  • bruh take better care of that truck... not putting money into it because it's old is false economy. What, you don't want to spend a few hundred to maintain a 20 year old car, with the idea that you should spend a few tens of thousands on a new car that's made of plastic? Really? Fuck kelly blue book.

  • My friend bought one for $800 around 2010 from his brother in law. Then he got a brand new frame. It was a great deal. Being a mechanic he always gets those deals. However when the starter went south and we found out the entire intake had to be removed. Not a fun job at all in sub-zero weather.

  • My 2002 SR5 4x4 V8 Regular Cab Long Bed Tundra has been my dedicated work truck since 2003, it's a super reliable money making machine that has never let me down. Mods: JBA short tubes, TRD/Kazuma LSD, Hellwig rear anti-roll bar, and a big ass commercial A.R.E. bed cap. Not as exciting to drive as my 2007 5.7L RCSB Tundra is, but it's still an awesome truck that holds it's value like no other.

  • Couldn't agree more about the reliability of Toyotas. Just over 200,000 miles on our 94 Camry before it got hit by someone in the prime of its life oops. Currently driving a 2012 Prius C. 155,000 miles and the only thing to go was the door actuator for the automatic locks and a jammed CD. The car still runs like a beast despite being an outdoor car for the entirety of its life and driven 25,000 miles a year and Chicago winter. Is it a boring car? Absolutely. But sometimes it's not about having a fun car to drive. Sometimes it's about having a product that works for its intended purpose. Nobody praised the iPhone with the defective antenna that couldn't make phone calls no matter how many fun gadgets or bells and whistles it had because at the end of the day, it wasn't a good phone
