  • I got the same exact vehicle. Its a 2004 same color, same trim with 200k miles now. I bought it in Los Angeles, so no rust and now in Texas. Im also 48 now and you will be the same way too at this age. The Explorer is the only reliable thing in this world. I will keep it as long as I can.

  • Got one of these for free last year because otherwise it was off to scrap. New radiator, welded up the rust at the front of the roof, $400 garage paint job and its like new. Waiting on the death rattle but till then send it. Towing is great! Foot down, more noise, more fuel consumption, no extra speed

  • Wait wait wait...5800lbs for the XLS package? Are you sure? I mean I don't mean to question your knowledge, but I have a 2011 F-150 FX4 5.0L Supercab that tips the scales at about 5650lbs dry weight, this Explorer is much smaller than my truck. I cannot conceive how it could possibly be nearing 3 tons on the scale when my mid trim 4X4 F-150 is still 350lbs short of 3 tons, I think fully loaded 4X4 Expeditions barely hit 6000lbs.

  • Back in like 2005-2009, I think it was, my father owned a 2003 Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition. He still says it was the nicest vehicle he's ever owned, but the car just sorta...did what it did, about five years into our tenure with it. A shame, too. I liked that thing as a kid, hell of a lot more than the 2011 RAM 1500 with the leaky back window that eventually replaced it.

  • I call em exploders cause I’ve seen 4 cars explode over the course of my life thus far and all of them were Ford explorers of various years. I was thinking it would be something to do with the engines being shit.

    A NobodyA Nobody27 өдрийн өмнө
  • But that's not entirely true about the tires. Firestone agreed to take the hit but ford's horrible design was partially at fault for rollover and tire blow outs. The even tried changed the recommended pressure on the tires to prevent having to spend money on redesigning the exploder from the ground up but it didn't help, they were still prone to roll over. Donut did a great podcast about it too.

  • Dad bought an 02 XLT 4.0 4x4 brand new. By the early 2010s the transmission was already slipping and the vehicle rusting. It was parked until I started driving in 2014. I drove it until the trans finally gave out. The interior held up great and the engine was indestructible but the rest of the Explorer was absolute garbage. I wince every time I see one now.

  • I owned a 99 exploder. In one month of ownership it had 2 bad o2 sensors, bad maf, exhaust fell off, pulled to the right so badly that I was told I needed new front everything. I took it off the road and bashed it though the woods for 3 months. When it was time to send it to the junkyard I started it and bounced Rev limiter for minutes. Honestly over 3 minutes of rev bounce. It ran out of gas and didn't blow up. It was a terrible car with some good memories.
